The terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001

Remember how short my time is; for what futility have You created all the children of men? What man can live and not see death?
Psalm 89:47–49

The terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001
On 11 September 2001, two hijacked passenger planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York and brought them down. Thousands of people died in these attacks. In the midst of their lives, in the midst of their working days, they were called away into eternity.

When we think of these victims today, the question arises: Would we be prepared to leave the earth now, as suddenly as this, and meet God? Most of the time we suppress the fact that our lives can come to an end at any time. Perhaps we compare our age with statistical figures and derive our life expectancy from that. But no one can guarantee a long life.

That’s why it is good to prepare ourselves for eternity now. The eternal God, who is not bound by time, gives us trustworthy statements about the future. In the Bible He informs us that after death there are only two possibilities: either judgment and damnation in hell, or resurrection and a blessed life in heaven.

The first prospect concerns all people who have sinned and died without divine forgiveness of their sins. The second prospect concerns all people who have sinned but have come into peace with God through confession of their sins and faith in the sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 5:18-30 · Acts 22:12-21

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

As a bona fide member of the Kingdom of God, you must be a proof of His power to save. Matthew 1:21 says Jesus shall save His people from sin.

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

...when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem...
Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
