Overcoming doubts

And the Lord said, Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail.
Luke 22:31–32

Overcoming doubts
This morning Manuel told his fellow students at university that he is a Christian and believes in the Lord Jesus. In the ensuing discussion, some scoffed and others took their atheist stand.

Now he is sitting in his student room thinking back on the conversation. Suddenly he has doubts: “Am I on the right path in my faith in Jesus Christ? What if the others are right after all? Their arguments seem so convincing!” A terrible storm begins to rage in his heart. The arguments of his peers gain more and more power of persuasion in his heart. Manuel no longer knows where he actually stands. He is no longer sure of anything.

What is happening to him? Manuel has taken a clear stand as a Christian so now the devil is shooting fiery arrows at him, trying to shake his faith. This difficult time lasts several weeks. Manuel reads the Bible regularly and brings his distress to God in prayer. Gradually, the storm in his heart subsides and is replaced by a deep peace.

During this time and with the help of his Lord, Manuel has come to understand two things. Firstly, he cannot possibly resist the attacks of the devil in his own strength. Secondly, the Word of God is absolutely reliable and unchanging. “It is written” is the only retort from which Satan flees.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 14:1-32 · Acts 25:1-12

NEW LIFE IN CHRIST

There is a nature that is of the Earth and there is a nature that is of Heaven. Since the fall of man, the earthly nature of man has become corrupted and therefore is greatly under the influence of the kingdom of Satan. Characteristic features of this nature are: wickedness, moral perversion - sodomy and all sorts of...More
