The Apostle John expresses this wish to the...

I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
3 John 2

The Apostle John expresses this wish to the faithful Christian, Gaius. For him, Gaius’ external well-being and health are just as important as his internal state. What can we note about the relationship between the outward and inward wellbeing of a Christian?

First, those who have accepted Christ as Saviour and have surrendered their lives to Him can count on God’s blessings on their journey through life. However, this doesn’t mean that a Christian is always blessed with prosperity and physical health.

Secondly, we should never fall into the same mental trap as Job’s friends did. They considered Job’s suffering to be a punishment from God. But with this hasty judgment they were thoroughly mistaken, for in the end it became clear that God was not angry with Job but with his friends. Therefore, let us beware of misjudgments when we see hardships and sickness in the lives of believers.

Third, contentment for the Christian doesn’t depend solely on income and possessions, but above all on fellowship with his God and the assurance that nothing can separate him from God’s love (Romans 8:38–39). The Apostle Paul gave a good example of this contentment when he wrote to the Christians in Philippi: “Indeed I have all and abound” (Philippians 4:18). He didn’t formulate this statement from a luxury villa or from a holiday destination but from his imprisonment in Rome. The true “treasure” of the redeemed, and thus their future, lies in heaven and is safely stored there.

Fourth, God will not leave the believer without help in any situation:

But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord, He is their strength in the time of trouble.

Psalm 37:39

Today’s reading: Isaiah 26:1-27:13 · Acts 28:16-31
