Spectators

And the people stood looking on.
Luke 23:35

Spectators
About 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross outside the city of Jerusalem. The Son of God had become a man to offer the grace of God for salvation to all, but He was rejected, and His invitation to men to reconcile with God was refused.

Now Jesus Christ hung on the cross and silently endured the mockery of His enemies. Then, at noon, it suddenly became pitch dark for three hours. At the end, the Saviour cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46). Then in divine power He gave up His life. Thus, He fulfilled the work of redemption that was necessary for sinful people to be saved.

Many people just stood there and watched. They wanted to take a neutral position as uninvolved spectators and observe the incident from a distance. After the Saviour died, it says, “And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned” (Luke 23:48). Somehow his death had touched them inwardly after all.

There are also such bystanders today as well. They listen when Jesus Christ is spoken of, but they think that it doesn’t concern them personally. However, this is a mistake – everyone who comes to know about the Lord Jesus is faced with a decision: Do I accept Him as my Saviour or do I reject Him?

Today’s reading: Isaiah 31:1-32:20 · Hebrews 2:5-10

LIFE IN ABUNDANCE 1

Under normal circumstances, no human being desires to be a nonentity. The various forces in the world however, are responsible for many people spending their entire life amounting to nothing and dwelling in the valley of not-well-to-do persons. The Almighty God Himself in making man did not intend for him to be a...More

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (10)
A spiritual treasure had been entrusted to the apostle Paul that he wished to share with the Christians in Rome. It did not come from his own abilities or knowledge. What he wished to impart to them he had himself received...More
