Spectators

And the people stood looking on.
Luke 23:35

Spectators
About 2,000 years ago, Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross outside the city of Jerusalem. The Son of God had become a man to offer the grace of God for salvation to all, but He was rejected, and His invitation to men to reconcile with God was refused.

Now Jesus Christ hung on the cross and silently endured the mockery of His enemies. Then, at noon, it suddenly became pitch dark for three hours. At the end, the Saviour cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46). Then in divine power He gave up His life. Thus, He fulfilled the work of redemption that was necessary for sinful people to be saved.

Many people just stood there and watched. They wanted to take a neutral position as uninvolved spectators and observe the incident from a distance. After the Saviour died, it says, “And the whole crowd who came together to that sight, seeing what had been done, beat their breasts and returned” (Luke 23:48). Somehow his death had touched them inwardly after all.

There are also such bystanders today as well. They listen when Jesus Christ is spoken of, but they think that it doesn’t concern them personally. However, this is a mistake – everyone who comes to know about the Lord Jesus is faced with a decision: Do I accept Him as my Saviour or do I reject Him?

Today’s reading: Isaiah 31:1-32:20 · Hebrews 2:5-10

A WORD ON CLEAVING TO THE LORD (2)

Observe, they are exhorted with purpose of heart to cleave to the Lord. A distracted heart is the bane of a Christian. When my heart is filled with Christ, I...More

Having opened their treasures, they offered to Him gifts, gold, and frankincense

"Having opened their treasures, they offered to Him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh."
(Matthew 2:11)

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and when the tidings reached the guilty tyrant who sat upon the Jewish throne, he "was troubled and all Jerusalem with him." The men of the city had...More

THE BREVITY OF TIME

How recklessly this age speeds to self destruction! The word of God is accurate and authentic in its prediction of the latter end of the world and in warning His saints of the end times, so that they are not overtaken by the prevalence of evil in this age! In virtually every facet of life, there is an overturning...More
