The nature of God

God is love.

God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

1 John 4:8; 1 John 1:5

The nature of God
In many places in the Bible we read about the omnipotence of God as the creator of heaven and earth. But God has not only revealed His eternal power and greatness, He has also told us in His Word crucial things about His nature: God is love, and God is light. This is His very nature.

God is love. And because He rests in Himself and needs nothing for Himself, His love has no need of an external cause to become active. This is how God showed His love for us when there was nothing at all lovable in us. When we were sinners and enemies of God, He gave His Son to die for us (Romans 5:8, 10).

God’s love proves itself to mankind in grace, mercy, kindness and longsuffering.

God is also light – light in a moral sense. And this stands in contrast to the moral darkness that has gripped man since the Fall into sin. But a person who sees in God his “light” and “salvation” receives clarity and guidance for his path through life (Psalm 27:1).

God is light – this also means that He is true (Deuteronomy 32:4). He is pure and holy, and cannot see or bear evil; indeed He must punish it. And in His judgment of evil and His reward of good, He proves Himself righteous (Genesis 18:25).

Even in Old Testament times, something of the nature of God was known. But it was revealed in all its glory only when the Son of God came to earth (John 1:17–18).

Today’s reading: Isaiah 50:1-11 · Hebrews 11:17-31

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

ATTENTIVE TO THE MASTER'S INSTRUCTIONS?

It is always good to pay close attention to instructions given by someone you claim to be your guide or guardian. Often, we miss many opportunities, breakthroughs and victories because we fail to see the details of the instructions given to us on a subject. A multinational company once held a promotional exam for...More
