For centuries, people have puzzled over...

Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.
Matthew 2:2

For centuries, people have puzzled over what the Star of Bethlehem might have been.

Some astronomers suggest that the Star of Bethlehem could have been a comet in 2 BC, a tail star like Hale-Bopp. Chinese chronicles mention such a comet in 4 BC. As another explanation a so-called supernova in 3 BC has been considered, as it is also mentioned in Chinese chronicles in spring of 5 BC. However, the most probable explanation is that the Creator-God caused a “special star” to appear for the birth announcement and then allowed it to disappear again because the Bible text speaks of a star which was seen first from the East and some time later again at a certain location over Israel.

Much more important than the astronomical question of the nature of the star of Bethlehem is the fact that God used this star to bring the astrologers from the East, the wise men, to Jesus. God spoke to them in the language they understood: through a star. The magi saw, understood, and obeyed. And they found Jesus Christ, worshipped Him, and returned home with joy.

Today God also talks to us in a language we can understand. He has given us the Bible. The Bible, God’s Word, tells us in detail about the birth, life and death of the Son of God. In it, God shows us the way to His Son Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world.

Today’s reading: Isaiah 59:1-21 · Mark 1:21-34

It may be that Jehovah will look on mine affliction, and that Jehovah will requite me good for my being cursed this day. And David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill's side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast...More
