Imperishable treasures

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal.
Matthew 6:19

Imperishable treasures
During his student days, James had one major goal: he wanted to become the tennis champion of his university. So he trained hard and played with great commitment. How proud he was when the trophy for the best tennis player with his name on it stood in the university’s display case.

A few years later, someone sent him the winner’s trophy by post. He had found it in a rubbish bin where it had been thrown due to a renovation. That’s when James had the thought, “Sooner or later, all of our winning trophies go into the rubbish!” Sports records are broken by others; fame and glory gradually fade away.

God invites us to set higher goals for ourselves and to invest in eternity. Jesus Christ makes the recommendation to “lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:20–21).

The most beautiful and greatest treasure we can possess is eternal life – God’s gift of grace in Christ Jesus (Romans 6:23). We receive this gift through personal faith in the Lord Jesus.

Now we can live each day with the conviction that God has an eternal and happy future in store for us. When we direct our lives towards heavenly glory and live them for the glory of God, we gather treasures in heaven.

Today’s reading: Ecclesiastes 11:1-10 · Mark 7:1-13

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
