Joseph and Mary could hardly have been...

So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2:6–7

Joseph and Mary could hardly have been wealthy people. For such people every landlord would still find it possible to accommodate them somehow, according to their status. But Jesus, the son of Mary, found the most inhospitable conditions when He entered the world.

Although Jesus was at the same time God’s only begotten Son, He was rejected from the outset, as our story indicates. And that is how it remained throughout His life. He possessed nothing, not even a place to sleep, and in the end only the crude cross remained for Him.

Many people in the world suffer similar things. They are treated unjustly, ostracised and die. But no one can be compared to the Son of God. Christ, who possessed all things in eternal glory, voluntarily became poor for us so that we might become rich through His poverty (2 Corinthians 8:9). However, one question still remains for us. Do we have room for Him? Today, it isn’t about “a room”. Our heart, our whole being, is called to receive the Son of God. No one who receives Him will afterwards remain as they were before. When Jesus Christ comes into a person’s life, everything changes: the proud nature, self-will and unjust actions must give way so that the love and peace of God can unfold.

Have you already given Christ room in your heart? He calls to us: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me” (Revelation 3:20).

Today’s reading: Zechariah 13:1-14:5 · Mark 15:1-15
