It is more blessed to give than to receive

I have shown you in every way, by labouring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.
Acts 20:35

It is more blessed to give than to receive
In the newspaper I read an interview with a “gift researcher” – that’s what this professor was called. In the course of the conversation, various aspects of giving were highlighted, for example, how big a gift should be or under what circumstances one gives a gift and so on. While reading, one statement in particular stood out to me. The professor said, “Giving freely is not innate to us.” Then I thought to myself how close this man was to the truth! Giving freely and giving things away is not something we are born with.

But as believing Christians we are able to imitate our Lord Jesus in giving. The new life can make of us those who gladly give something away. We only have to look to our Saviour who was always the giver. When people were hungry, He gave them bread. When they had questions, He made time to answer them. On the cross of Calvary, He even gave His own life to save us.

This giving attitude can also shape us. If we keep our eyes open, we will recognise many opportunities in our surroundings to give something of our possessions, our time or our love. Let us ask the Lord to give us generous hearts. Then we will experience for ourselves what the Lord Jesus said: It is more blessed to give than to receive.

Today’s reading: Zechariah 14:6-21 · Mark 15:16-28
