An unequal yoke

Jehoshaphat … allied himself with Ahab. After some years he went down to visit Ahab in Samaria; and Ahab ... persuaded him to go up with him to Ramoth Gilead.
2 Chronicles 18:1–2

An unequal yoke
King Jehoshaphat believed in God and lived for Him. But one day, he allied himself with the godless King Ahab and joined forces with him. How did this happen?

o Jehoshaphat allied himself with Ahab. His son Jehoram married the daughter of the king of Israel. Now he was related to Ahab by family ties. – Today, as Christians, we often face the danger of forming improper relationships with unbelievers. From this, obligations arise that bring us into serious conflicts.

o Jehoshaphat visited Ahab. The family relationship with this godless king seemed to require that Jehoshaphat should pay him a visit. However, by doing so, he cultivated fellowship with this unbelieving man. – An improper connection with unbelievers often leads to regular and friendly contact with them. We might think we are obligated to do so, but we shouldn’t have fellowship with them.

o Jehoshaphat went on a joint campaign with Ahab. When the king of Israel urged him, Jehoshaphat declared, “I am as you are, and my people as your people; we will be with you in the war.” – This is how far it can go when we align ourselves with unbelievers! Eventually, we make common cause with them, even though the Bible warns us: “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers” (2 Corinthians 6:14).

Today’s reading: Exodus 30:17-38 · Luke 12:49-59

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

ATTENTIVE TO THE MASTER'S INSTRUCTIONS?

It is always good to pay close attention to instructions given by someone you claim to be your guide or guardian. Often, we miss many opportunities, breakthroughs and victories because we fail to see the details of the instructions given to us on a subject. A multinational company once held a promotional exam for...More
