Abhorring evil

But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him.
Colossians 3:8–10

Abhorring evil
“Miss Missionary, I’m still not part of Jesus!” – The old woman, Mrs. Wang, sounds desperate: Just the day before, she had confessed her sins to the Lord Jesus and put her trust in Him. But now, sadly, she takes the missionary’s hand and says, “I’m not free. My life hasn’t changed. I’m still the same, still committing the same sins. This morning, I stole bread again!”

The missionary asks the distressed woman, “When you stole before – were you sad then?”

“No, not at all,” Mrs. Wang responds, “the better I succeeded in stealing secretly, the prouder I was.”

“You see! You’re not the same as before. You have changed. You’re no longer proud of stealing – in fact, you’re sad about it. That’s because you’ve been washed clean of your sins and have received a new life through the Holy Spirit. He is the one who now reminds you that you need to shed your old bad habits. Today, unfortunately, you sinned and succumbed to temptation. But it’s not the same to live in sin as it is to commit a single sin!”

Mrs. Wang breathes a sigh of relief. She confesses her theft to God once again and henceforth receives God’s strength to do good and remain faithful to the Lord Jesus. Some time later, she says to the missionary, “Before, I could sin without remorse. But now it hurts me when I succumb to sin.”

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 1:1-19 · Luke 19:28-38
