Facing death

But My salvation will be forever. ... Listen to Me!
Isaiah 51:6–7

Facing death
The explosion was so powerful that it shook the entire neighbourhood.

I remember the crash caused by the explosion and the irresistible force that threw me to the ground ... In the hospital, I regained consciousness, my scalp full of shards of glass, heavily dazed and weak. The accident had happened in Belfast. A bomb had exploded in a delivery van. But I was still alive and practically uninjured, even though there were many casualties!

I realised that I had narrowly escaped death. On the one hand I was dismayed, but on the other hand, looking back, I felt no fear. That was because I was absolutely sure that if I had died, everything would have been fine for me. I would be with Christ in heaven now. That gave me a deep peace in my heart.

I wouldn’t wish anyone to come so close to death. But I am sure that such an experience can be useful for reassessing one’s own priorities and focusing on essential questions: Here are some convictions of believing men from the Bible that I also share:

o “For I know that my Redeemer lives, ... and after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God” (Job 19:25–26).

o “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28).

o “I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You” (Job 42:2).

o “For I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that day” (2 Timothy 1:12).

One outstanding need that divine midwives must satisfy is to have their names written in the Book of Life. This is the most important book in the universe. Given modern trends and need for details, most institutions have various books in which records are kept and can be retrieved in years to come. Every...More
