A sad beginning without end

He began to be in want.
Luke 15:14

A sad beginning without end
The Lord Jesus once told the story of a father who had two sons (Luke 15:11-32). The younger one demanded his share of the inheritance and left his father. He travelled to a distant country and wasted his wealth there. He lived extravagantly until he had spent everything. Then a severe famine arose, and now he began to be in need.

The father points to God, who has given an “inheritance” to all people. As the Creator, He endowed them with much good: beauty, strength, time, health, talent – all of this comes from God. But how have people handled it? Have they not all, like the younger son, turned their backs on God and sought happiness in the world? How many have wasted their “wealth” through a sinful life and ruined themselves!

Although people try to enjoy life without God, the expected fulfilment does not come. Instead, an inner emptiness sets in. Moreover, every sin has its price. The conscience is burdened, and the negative consequences of a self-willed, sinful life are clearly felt. In a metaphorical sense, people begin to experience lack.

If they do not turn to God from their wrong path, and believe in His Son, Jesus Christ, they will continue to decline. The sad beginning of their distress continues in the afterlife. They will suffer eternal torment in hell.

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 23:1-15 · Romans 1:1-7
