Divine selection

The base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen.
1 Corinthians 1:28

Divine selection
God offers His saving grace to all people. Yet, generally, influential and recognised people struggle to believe in the gospel. Often it is simple and despised people who acknowledge their guilt before God and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour. Because they don’t think highly of themselves, it’s easier for them to accept God’s grace for salvation. For this reason, God chooses insignificant people to carry out His will and work. This is evident in several examples in the Bible:

o God appointed David, who tended some sheep in the wilderness, as the king over Israel. He was not an impressive figure like his predecessor Saul. Yet, as a shepherd, he was a suitable leader for the people of God.

o The Lord chose simple fishermen like Peter and John to be His apostles. Although they lacked high education and were not particularly influential in society, they were to testify to His death and resurrection.

o God used the repentant criminal on the cross, who acknowledged his guilt and believed in the Saviour, to bear a glorious testimony about Christ: “this Man has done nothing wrong” (Luke 23:41). It’s similar with us, who as believing Christians are not highly regarded in the world: God has chosen us to live and work for the Lord Jesus on earth. What grace!

Today’s reading: Jeremiah 29:1-14 · Romans 4:1-8

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
