The Lord Jesus Christ descended from the highest height to the deepest depth. He is God’s Son from eternity. Yet, in the fullness of time, He became a real human being. While remaining the almighty God, as demonstrated by the many miracles He performed, He gave up the outward display of divine glory. He looked like any other man but was sinless, and at the same time He was God.

With His incarnation, the Lord made Himself nothing and took on the form of a servant. He, who once brought creation into existence by His almighty word, was now willing to serve and obey. He declared: “Behold, I have come – in the volume of the book it is written of Me – to do Your will, O God” (Hebrews 10:7).

The Son of God became man in spirit, soul and body. In doing so, He experienced the limitations of human life. He hungered and thirsted. He grew tired and stood weeping at the grave of His friend Lazarus. Only sin did not touch Him. He committed no sin, knew no sin and sin was not in Him.

Yet, the Lord Jesus descended even deeper. He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Philippians 2:8). There, He voluntarily and humbly took the lowest place. He obeyed His God to the utmost, even if it meant suffering indescribably, and even dying.
