The Lord Jesus’ own needs and sufferings...

For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.
Mark 10:45

The Lord Jesus’ own needs and sufferings never prevented Him from thinking of others and helping them. When the Saviour sat weary by the well during His journey, a woman came to draw water. He engaged her in conversation to present to her the grace of God and to address her conscience. Although physically tired, the salvation of this woman was dear to His heart. So He made every effort to lead her to repentance and faith.

Once, when the Lord and His disciples found no time to eat, they sailed to a solitary place by ship. When they arrived, many people had already gathered there. Seeing their great spiritual needs, He instructed them in the Word of God. Instead of satisfying His hunger, He took the time to proclaim the truth to the crowd.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, He anticipated what He would endure on the cross. He told the disciples, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death” (Mark 14:34). Then He withdrew a little distance from them to pray to His Father and to present His distress to Him. When He returned to the disciples, they were asleep. Although He was deeply anticipating His sufferings and death on the cross, He did not neglect His own. He gently admonished them and urged them,

“Watch and pray lest you enter into temptation”

(Mark 14:38).

Today’s reading: Leviticus 24:1-23 · Psalms 69:13-28
