The human heart

For thus says the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the LORD’s counsel – that will stand.

Isaiah 57:15; Proverbs 19:21

The human heart
When the Bible speaks of the heart, it doesn’t usually refer to our hollow muscle that pumps blood through the body. Rather, it refers to the centre of our will. In this centre, decisions are made about what I say (or don’t say), what I do (or don’t do), what I look at or click on (or don’t), and what goals I pursue in my life (or don’t).

God is the one who knows “the hearts of all”. He sees all my thoughts! Frightening? Perhaps yes, especially if I am not at peace with God. Because I realise that my heart is full of wickedness; it needs a thorough cleansing. When I confess my sins to God, He forgives me because Jesus Christ has paid the penalty for them. Through faith in Him, my heart is cleansed, “sprinkled from an evil conscience” (Acts 1:24; 15:9; 1 Chronicles 28:9; Hebrews 10:22).

So, I am made right with God. Instead of fearing the holy God, I then realise that the holy God is also a merciful God. Through the Lord Jesus Christ, He has become my Father, and I am in His thoughts. His thoughts are “deep”, “precious”, and “higher” than my thoughts. He directs my steps. And what impresses me particularly is that He dwells with those who are downtrodden to lift them up again. What inner peace it gives me to know this! (Psalm 92:5; 139:17; Isaiah 55:9)

In this God who knows my often timid and fearful heart, I want to firmly trust, because His purposes will stand!

Today’s reading: Joshua 2:1-13 · 1 Corinthians 1:10-17

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Who am Ithat you have brought me this far?' 2 Samuel 7:18 (NIV 2011 Edition)
A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
