God’s response to our fear
After parting ways with Laban, Jacob continued his journey to Israel. Now he had to encounter his brother Esau, whom he had greatly wronged many years before. This dreadful thought consumed Jacob entirely, for he feared his brother’s revenge. If he had been preoccupied with his God, he could have spared himself much of this soul anguish. Then the declaration of faith from Psalm 118:6 would have come from his lips: “The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Instead, fear of Esau dominated him.

Despite his lack of faith, he did not have to deal with the problem alone. God saw the distress that occupied Jacob’s mind and made him tremble. He saw how fear gripped Jacob’s heart with an icy hand. Then the LORD addressed Jacob’s inner feelings and encouraged him. God’s mercy was greater than the terror that filled Jacob: “The angels of God met him.”

Was there a better proof of God’s intention to protect Jacob than these mighty heavenly beings? How often do we think little of God’s grace! It never depends on our merit. It is a bright expression of God’s love, which is always there for His own.
