Two kinds of friendships
Abraham responded to God’s call and left his land. He journeyed to Canaan where he lived as a nomad. Instead of seeking a homeland on earth, he looked upward and nurtured a relationship of faith with God in heaven.

The world held no attraction for Abraham any more. He lived separated from it, had fellowship with God, and looked forward to his heavenly homeland. He obeyed what the LORD commanded him and also instructed his family to obey. This made him a friend of God, who was initiated into the thoughts of the LORD. Before God revealed His plans with Sodom to him, He said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing?” (Genesis 18:17).

Lot, who had travelled with his uncle Abraham for a long time, had to make a personal decision one day about where he wanted to live. He chose the fertile plain of the Jordan and eventually moved to the godless city of Sodom. There, he later sat in the gate, taking on a political role.

Although Lot was a believer, he allied himself with the world. In his case, what is stated in James 4:4 applied: “Friendship with the world is enmity with God”. By taking his place at the gate of Sodom, he publicly sided with the godless inhabitants of that city. He testified, “I am one of them!”

What are we? A friend of God or a friend of the world?
