A happy Christian
An Ethiopian statesman had travelled to Jerusalem to worship the true God there. On his return journey to his homeland, he encountered Philip, who presented Jesus to him as the Saviour based on Isaiah 53. The Ethiopian accepted the gospel faithfully and was saved. He was baptised to follow the Lord Jesus from then on. Then we read: “He went on his way rejoicing.”

He possessed forgiveness of sins and eternal life. He now had a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus and the firm hope of being with Him in heaven forever. All of this was reason enough for him to go his way with joy. Of course, he now had to return to a land where his Saviour was not known and he could not know how his fellow countrymen would react to the news that he had become a Christian. But he had his Lord, who went with him and was with him every day. That made his heart happy.

Do we also go on our journey of faith with joy? It may lead through the “desert” or up a “steep hill”. The first steps after conversion are sometimes not the easiest. Many don’t understand us and abandon us because we have become “pious”. But we know that the Lord Jesus is with us. He Himself is the inexhaustible source of true joy for us. When we read the Bible and pray to Him, He makes our hearts glad and rejoice.
