Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself: Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship. And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city: Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me. But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:

Contrary to Tertullus, his accuser, Paul began his defence without any flattery. He stressed that Felix, through his extensive experience, was capable of judging the situation.
The apostle explained that his stay in Jerusalem had been far too short to instigate a riot. Moreover, he had not partaken in disputes of any kind or caused an unlawful assembly. The first accusation was pure invention.
Then Paul addressed the second accusation. He did not deny following the despised "Nazarene". But he dismissed the reproach of a "sect", since there was no question of any deviation from the "God of his fathers" or His revelations. The contrary was the case. Unlike the Sadducees, who disregarded the prophetic books, Paul declared that he adhered unreservedly to the content of the entire Old Testament.
