If we had done anything wrong...

And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
Genesis 3:8-9

If we had done anything wrong as children, we often tried to keep out of our mother's sight and hide. But she would calmly wait until we emerged from our hideout. Then there was nothing for it but to confess and apologise for our misdeeds. Finally she would take us in her arms and forgive us.
Many people act just as foolishly: they try to hide from our omnipotent God. Some conceal themselves behind their religion, others behind their excuses, yet others do so behind their imagined good works; many simply deny God's existence.
However, God is there, waiting for us to come out of our hiding place. And God does not just wait; He calls us too. Just as on that occasion in the garden of Eden, He calls everyone by means of the gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ and the forgiveness of sins. If we confess our sins to Him, God accepts us. Just as the father in the well known parable welcomed the prodigal son with an embrace, God takes us in His arms and forgives us because Jesus died for our sins.
By faith in Christ, the sinner is pronounced free of all guilt and receives peace with God. Great joy and the peace of God then fill his heart. There is no longer any need to hide!
Today's reading: Ezekiel ch.23 vv. 1-21
