“No, there’s no fire here,”

Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.
1 Thessalonians 5:6-7

"No, there's no fire here," said the elderly man, shaking his head as he looked out of his window in the block of flats. He appeared to be enjoying the view. But to their horror, the tourists passing the building saw the thick smoke behind his back. "Yes, there is! Something's on fire!" they shouted. But the man didn't even turn around. He neither took their warning seriously, nor did he smell burning.
While the tourists were calling the fire brigade over their mobile phone and alarming other tenants in the house by intensive ringing and shouting, a neighbour across the called out, "That often happen with him," as if it were unimportant. Like the man in question, he seemed to think, "Why get so worked up? What business is it of yours?"
The firemen stormed into the building, prevented worse damage and brought the man outside. His hair was already singed, the flames having reached him while he asserted that all was in order. He was an alcoholic, so drunk that he didn't realise that the warnings were intended for him.
Watch and be sober! These were words from today's Bible text. Jesus Christ is coming again. Then there will be no further chance of being converted. The one decision that can keep us from eternal torment must be taken now. How tragic it is that so many of our fellowmen prefer to let their minds be clouded by sin. They are in grave danger. If only all would hear God's warning call and be saved!
Today's reading: 1 Samuel 2:18-36
