“Son of Man”

When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
Matthew 16:13

In the gospels we constantly read that the Lord Jesus called Himself the "Son of Man". This is a majestic title that we find in the Old Testament. In the book of Daniel, it designates the ruler over the future kingdom of God, whose reign will never end (7:13,14,27).
The title - "Son of Man" assumes that the Son of God became a true human being. He was the Son of God from eternity; He is "the eternally blessed God" (Romans 9:5). But He became Man in order to carry out God's counsel in its entirety. The name "Son of Man" is thus the counterpart to the name "Son of God". As the Son of God, He had from the outset no beginning nor becoming. As Son of Man He entered the world through His incarnation "when the fullness of the time had come" (Galatians 4:4; cf. also Psalm 2:7).
Now the title "Son of Man" signifies far more than the mere fact of His incarnation, however much this affects us. As the Son of Man He also suffered and went as was written of Him (cf. Mark 14:21), right to the cross. For this reason, He will reign as Son of Man and exercise judgment on earth, where His cross stood (cf. Matthew 26:24; John 6:62).
How our hearts rejoice at the thought that the Lord Jesus will soon come from heaven and take the place due to Him that He won for Himself as the Son of Man!
Today's reading: 2 Samuel 22:1-23

One attribute of a champion is strength. The divine champion is one who receives divine strengthening....More
