And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing. Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you. And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat. Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat. And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls. And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.

Thoughts on the book of Acts (195)
Paul, the great gospel preacher for the nations of the world was no fanatic out of touch with reality. This he proved when he prevented the sailors from escaping. This was again evident when he ordered the sailors and passengers to eat some food before the exertions of the dawning day. Indeed, God's promises come to pass! Paul trusted them fully. But that did not excuse all on board from dutifully doing all that was necessary to sustain their life.
Paul's prediction that they would finish up on an island proved true. With his presence of mind, he stopped the sailors from escaping, thereby gaining much moral authority. Now the crew and passengers witness how the apostle takes bread, thanks God, the Creator, and Sustainer of life, aloud and starts eating. What calm radiated from that man, who wholly trusted God! Then the others followed his example and also took some food.
