Christ the Saviour (3)

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:8-9

Christ the Saviour (3)
In our meditation on Tuesday, we showed that Jesus Christ is the Saviour of the world in whom "we must be saved". Maybe you ask: "But how are you saved?" What brings us to the point of not saying that Christ is the Saviour, but that He is our, or rather, my Saviour?
We could ask the questions differently: how can I obtain this salvation? Today's verse gives us the answer. When it is a question of eternal salvation, I can in no way do anything to earn it. I am totally dependent on the grace of God in Jesus Christ. But I can take hold of Christ by faith. Because He sacrificed His life on the cross of Calvary, the forgiveness of our sins is offered to us free of charge. I must lay claim to it by faith. Faith, that is, truly believing in the Son of God and His work of atonement for sin gives us access to eternal salvation. Any personal effort or assumed merit is out of the question.
Whoever sincerely believes in Christ, however, can say: "Jesus is my Saviour." An eternally secure relationship to Him is established. Our verse tells believers: "You have been saved through faith." This is a fact that cannot be disputed. Believers have the salvation of their souls (cf. 1 Peter 1:9), and their eternal salvation is assured (cf. John 5:24 & 1 Thessalonians 5:9)
(to be concluded tomorrow)
Today's reading: Acts 5: 1-28

However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More

Jeremiah 17:9

In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More
