Impoverished for you (2)

For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.
2 Corinthians 8:9

Impoverished for you (2)
When a child is expected, the parents buy a cradle for it beforehand. Mary, however, laid her Son "in a manger, there being no room for them in the inn" (Luke 2:7).
When Jesus began His public ministry, multitudes once surrounded Him so closely that He boarded a ship and taught them from there. Significantly, the ship did not belong to Him, but to Simon Peter (Luke 9:58).
Before the Son of God entered Jerusalem for the last time, He sent two disciples to fetch the foal of an ass for Him. The reason He gave was: "The Lord has need of it" (Luke 19:31). This fulfilled the Old Testament prophesy of Zechariah (9:9). But He also "needed" it, not having one of His own.
Before the memorable last Passover with His disciples, Jesus sent two of them to inquire about a suitable room: "Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?" (Luke 22:11). The Son of God possessed no guest room whatever.
Betrayed, denied and abandoned by men, Jesus died for us and our sins and was buried, not in His own tomb, but in that of Joseph of Arimathia (cf. Luke 23:53). The Son of God became poor for our sakes. May we render our thanks eternally!
Today's reading: Acts 17:16-34

HAZARDING LIVES FOR MISSIONS

Within the space of a few years after the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, the gospel about Him had reached Rome, Alexandria, Antioch and all the great cities in Europe, Africa and Asia. The gospel had made great inroads into the aristocracy and among intellectuals, and had already changed the lives...More
