Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (105)

Therefore as through one man's offence judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one man's righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one man's obedience many will be made righteous.
Romans 5:18.19

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (105)
Through the fall of Adam death entered the world and spread to all. As a result of Adam's sin all were threatened with condemnation.

Facing this, we have the righteous act of Jesus Christ, who crowned His life-long obedience by going into death. The result of this is: opening the door to the "justification of life" for all.

Everyone can benefit by it.

In both cases the possible extent of the one act is indicated. On the ground of Jesus' work of redemption the good news can be announced to all.

But not all accept the message. Whoever refuses to be led to conversion is not one of Christ's family and has no part in redemption. That is why in the next verse the actual, final consequences of Adam's disobedience and the obedience of Christ are mentioned. Then it is no longer a question of "all" but of "many". This again refers to the family of Adam and that of Christ. Through Adam's disobedience "many", i.e. all his descendants, became sinners with a sinful nature. Through Christ's obedience "many", i.e. all who belong to Him by faith, and only such, are given the status of righteousness.
