Redemption (1)

In whom (Jesus Christ) we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 1:14

Redemption (1)
Sin has made us human beings guilty before God, and we cannot free ourselves. However, the gospel shows us the Redeemer, who paid the entire debt of our guilt. Redemption demanded a high price. Holy Scripture teaches that Jesus Christ is the Redeemer who gave Himself as the ransom (cf. Matthew 20, 28; 1 Timothy 2, 6).

Peter wrote to believers: "You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot (1 Peter 1, 18.19).

Many people imagine that we can contribute something towards our redemption. The Word of God admits of no such thing. It rather states: "Their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them" (Ezekiel 7, 19).

Nor can we redeem any other person: "None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him - for the redemption of their souls is costly!" (Psalm 49, 7.8). Later it states: "But God will redeem my soul" (v. 15), which is confirmed in Psalm 130, v. 7: "With him is abundant redemption."

Christ accomplished the great work of atonement necessary to pay for all our debt and procure our redemption. He is the foundation of the redemption that God offers. This is also stressed in Ephesians: "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace" (ch.1, v. 7).
