That which remains

Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will endure.
Psalm 102:25.26

That which remains
We are constantly confronted with transience on earth. What a good thing it is that we, as believers, have something that, despite all that might change, will remain for all eternity:

a) Today's text from the Bible speaks of the Lord Jesus and makes a stark contrast between Him and creation. He remains! What a comfort this is for us, when, for example, we mourn the loss of a beloved relation. Jesus Christ is ever with us in His love and grace. He does not change.

b) "All flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and its flower falls away, but the word of the LORD endures for ever" (1 Peter 1, 24.25).Here the transience of mankind is contrasted with God's eternal Word. This remains valid for ever. In all life's vicissitudes we can count on every statement in the Bible. The Lord will not leave any promise unkept. His entire Word will find its fulfilment.

c) "The world is passing away, and the lust of it, but he who does the will of God abides for ever" (1 John 2, 17). Human society achieves great things without God. But one thing is certain: whatever the world produces will one day pass away, being worthless in God's sight. What counts and is precious for Him is those who do His will. That encourages us to live faithfully for Him.
