A guilty conscience

Yet a little while, and he who is coming will come and will not tarry. Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard.
Hebrews 10:37; 2:1

A guilty conscience
Herod Antipas was the tetrarch of Galilee and Perea. He had had John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Lord Jesus Christ, beheaded (cf. Matthew 14, 1 - 12). Since that day his conscience would not leave him in peace. The miracles that Jesus performed called forth a suspicion in Herod that John might possibly have risen from the dead, a thought that he found unbearable.

That the resurrection of a murdered person must be unbearable for the murderer is understandable. It would mean that God, who has the keys of life and death, has taken a stand on the side of the victim. This was no doubt Herod's great fear.

In the not too distant future the fears of those who reject Jesus Christ will be very similar. Many people wish to suppress the fact that He rose from the dead and returned to heaven. But He will assert His claims on earth from there. The kings of the earth, leaders of nations and armies, the rich and powerful will hide in caves and say to the rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of his wrath has come, and who is able to stand?" (Revelation 6, 15 - 17).

Our present age is still the day of grace. Jesus still appeals to you through the message of the Bible. He points you to the cross, where He put away the sins of all who believe on Him for ever. Won't you accept the eternal salvation He offers you out of sheer grace?

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
