The final attempt

Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28

The final attempt
In chapter 9, verses 18 -26, the evangelist Matthew tells some moving details of a day in the life of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The father of a dying girl, an influential, pious Jew comes to Jesus. Like many others of his religious contemporaries, he has avoided the travelling preacher, Jesus of Nazareth, hitherto.

But he is now at his wits' end. Someone who does not know what to do and sees no way out turns to Jesus Christ.

Then a desperate woman comes along, who has been ill for a long time and is avoided by everyone. Through her disease she is judged to be defiled by the Jewish law. She, too, turns to Jesus, shy and with hesitant trust in her heart. She also has no further hope. Doctors have given her up.

Here are two hopeless cases on their way to Christ. Is it their final attempt? Most certainly! But Jesus helps even those who have tried everything and failed. Today is not too late to ask for His help. That may be impossible tomorrow. So nobody should wait to bring the need or burden of his life to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Faith, even the timid faith of this woman, meets with a wonderful response: "Be of good cheer, daughter, your faith has made you well." And to the father of the sick child the Lord said, "Do not be afraid; only believe" (Matthew 9, 22; Mark 5, 36).

YOU CAN BE HIS WITNESS

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

...when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem...
Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
