God’s way with Lazarus (2)

When he (Jesus) heard that he was sick, he stayed two more days in the place where he was.
John 11:6

God's way with Lazarus (2)
Jesus received the news that His friend Lazarus had fallen ill. It was not necessary for Him to get this information. He was the Son of God, after all, and already knew of Lazarus' condition. Instead of setting out for Bethany straightaway, Jesus stayed in the same place for two more days. When He decided to go, Lazarus was already dead.

Let us now put ourselves in the two sisters' place. They will first wonder in their need and then in their mourning, "Why hasn't the Lord come yet?" Do we know such a gnawing, unrelenting question, for which we and no-one else can find an answer? The reason is given in the book of the prophet Isaiah: "My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are my ways your ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts" (ch. 55, vv. 8.9).

Let us not imagine that we are dealing with a cold, merciless God. The opposite is shown to be the case in this report: "Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus" (v. 5).

Where do we find comfort in our mourning, pain and despair? What gives us support in the darkest hours of our life? The certainty that Christ loves us with everlasting love! Nothing and no-one can separate us from Him (cf. Romans 8, 39).

If you belong to Him through faith, you can be sure that He will never leave you

OFFENDED IN CHRIST?

The Christian race must be run with lots of patience or else it will be bungled midway. If you are inpatient with Gods timing, you will not only get into trouble but may not be able to finish the race. A good number of backsliders derailed from their heavenly track because of impatience. In Matthew 11:6 Jesus...More

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And...

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And he sat at the tent-door in the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men standing near him.
(Genesis 18:1)

The spiritual elevation of Abraham in Genesis 18 and 19 is something very peculiar. He seems...More

THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is one thing to receive the anointing and another to keep growing on it. There are people who had the anointing, but today, everything has virtually ebbed out. It is possible to connect with the Holy Spirit and to continue to flow in the power of the anointing even at increasing levels. If this is your desire,...More

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More
