God’s way with Lazarus (4)

Jesus said to her (Martha), I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he may die, he shall live.
John 11:25

God's way with Lazarus (4)
When Jesus arrived in Bethany, his deceased friend Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. His mourning sister heard that Jesus was coming and ran out towards Him with a gentle reproach, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."

"Your brother will rise again," Jesus replied. "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day", answered Martha. The Jews at that time believed in a future resurrection. But then Jesus spoke the words of today's text. What do these glorious words mean to us?

"I am the resurrection and the life." We are well acquainted with the process of birth, life and death. A future after death, however, is beyond our experience or conception. But the Son of God tells us what follows: resurrection and life. And He was to prove the reality of it: He not only recalled Lazarus to life; soon after He rose from, the dead Himself. Credible eye-witnesses testify their encounters with the risen One in the New Testament.

Jesus Christ's resurrection presupposes His atoning death: the Good Shepherd gave His life for the sheep, but He rose again from the dead (cf. John 10, 11.17). Everyone who believes in God and His Son Jesus Christ, the Saviour and Lord, receives a part in His resurrection life. A believer "has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life" (John 5, 24).
