God’s way with Lazarus (5)

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, he groaned in the Spirit and was troubled. Jesus wept.
John 11:33.35

God's way with Lazarus (5)
Mary and Martha had sent Jesus news of their brother's illness, but the Lord had waited two days and not come immediately. Now Lazarus had died.

In the mean time many Jews had come to Bethany from nearby Jerusalem to comfort Martha and Mary. When Jesus stood before Mary and the Jews who were all weeping, He "groaned in the Spirit and was troubled." What about? Was it death, the dreadful consequence of sin, which causes so much suffering and mourning? Shortly after the sinless One would enter death voluntarily and thereby conquer the devil and "release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage" (Hebrews 2, 14.15).

In John's report a short sentence follows: "Jesus wept". Here the Lord Jesus appears as true Man before us. He, the eternal Son of God, became a man and became acquainted with human suffering. From His own experience He can thus understand and help when we go through suffering and trials (cf. Hebrews 2, 17.18). As a man Jesus wept for Lazarus and sympathized with his sorrowful sisters. He was not ashamed of His tears before others.

Do you mourn the loss of a loved one or a near relative? Then turn to the Lord Jesus! He knows what mourning is. He can truly understand you. And He will give you support and consolation.

(to be concluded tomorrow)

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
