God had shaken His people up through...

How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, follow him.
1 Kings 18:21

God had shaken His people up through a natural catastrophe. No rain had fallen for three and a half years. There was a disastrous famine, but had they understood why?

A century previously king Solomon had prayed to God at the dedication of the temple: "When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against you, when they pray and confess your name, then hear in heaven and forgive the sin of your servants" (2 Chronicles 6, 26.27).

Things had now come so far. On Mount Carmel there was a public dispute between God and the idol Baal, between Elijah, the only prophet of the one true God, and the 450 prophets of Baal. Now was the opportunity to turn to God.

But the people were undecided. With whom should they stand? There was Elijah, who preached God's salvation. They wouldn't chance that. Actually they knew who was God. But there was also king Ahab with the prophets of Baal. Should they ruin their relationship to their ruler? Woe betide anyone who opposed the king! And Elijah constantly spoke of the need to turn to God or face judgment!

Their hesitation was halted by the prophet's urgent question: "How long will you falter between two opinions?" ‘Through Elijah God was calling for a decision. God is patient; He grants everyone the opportunity to turn to Him, but making Him wait is tantamount to mocking Him. His patience is no excuse for postponing a decision. If anyone is lost, it is not because God failed to wait long enough.

DIVINE CHAMPION 2

Yesterday we discovered that our Lord Jesus Christ is the number one champion and that He makes His people champions. We also saw that a divine champion is a person raised up and supported by God.

One attribute of a champion is strength. The divine champion is one who receives divine strengthening....More
