A murderous intention

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you.
Ezekiel 36:26

A murderous intention
"I'll kill him." This thought constantly plagued the man at the wheel of his lorry. He could think of nothing else. But he had a long journey ahead of him and need to stop for the night. However, even in the hotel room his thirst for revenge gave him no peace.

In the bedside table he discovered a book that he had never seen before. He spent most of the night reading it. Next morning he left the hotel. When the room maid entered the room, to her horror she discovered a pistol lying next to an open Bible. On a sheet of paper was written a brief message: "This book has saved two lives: my own and that of my enemy."

How did that change of attitude come about? The Word of God had shone into that man's conscience like a spotlight, revealing his condition before God and the awful deed he was about to commit. God's light and love had touched and transformed the heart that had been filled with hatred. That explains the radical change.

Even if we are not planning a crime, we all need such a change. Through the Bible God shows us that the human heart is full of darkness. But Jesus Christ is "the true light that, coming into the world, gives light to every man" (John 1, 9). Whoever receives Christ, the true light, into his life by faith, experiences this fundamental transformation and becomes a child of God. The Lord Himself calls this transformation a totally new birth (cf. John 1, 9 - 13; 3, 3 - 8.16).
