I’ll wait, perhaps one day...

No-one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. Do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
John 6:44; Romans 2:4

I'll wait, perhaps one day...
"You have the chance to find faith; I don't. There's nothing I can do. Perhaps one day God will give me the chance."

This is a common argument. It makes one suppose that those who have faith are fortunate, others can't help it, and have to wait passively until it comes. Now this is contrary to the teaching of the Bible. Jesus said, "He who seeks finds" (Matthew 7, 8). Happily, having faith is not a matter of chance! This form of reasoning leaves out man's responsibility towards God.

It is true that God alone can lead someone to faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. In fact, left to ourselves, we should never turn to Him spontaneously. But it is equally true that God commands everyone to repent and believe what He says. Our duty is to obey. God's sovereignty that grants faith and man's responsibility to receive it are inseparable, so that no-one will be saved except through sheer grace. Nor will anyone be lost except through his own fault for refusing. These two facts that seem to us with our limited understanding irreconcilable are laid down clearly in the Bible, and we bow before the Word of God.

So instead of waiting passively for faith to come our way, let us respond to God's urgent invitation, for He loves us and wishes to save us.

It may be that Jehovah will look on mine affliction, and that Jehovah will requite me good for my being cursed this day. And David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill's side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast...More
