Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (119)

If, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from the law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another - to him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.
Romans 7:3.4

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (119)
Paul refers to the law of marriage as an example for a law having power exclusively over living persons. God's institution decrees that a marriage is terminated solely through death. Adultery is a sin that offends the order of God's creation (cf. Matthew 19, 5.6). Following the death of the married partner one is free to marry again. Death dissolved the union.

According to the same principle, for all Christians standing under the Mosaic law the bond with this law was dissolved. The law had been given by God and could not simply be cast off.

In the spiritual sense the law, the "old husband", did not die, however, but Christians died "to the law through the body of Christ", i.e. through His death. The Son of God became Man so as to die for us.

Christians are therefore freed from any obligation towards the law of Moses, but not to live for themselves, but to serve their risen Lord, the new "husband".

Being free from the law and united with Christ, the believer can now bring forth fruit for God.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Psalms 95 & 96

JESUS IN YOUR BOAT

No doubt, life in a sense is like the sea. A characteristic of the sea is that storms of varying degrees arise, putting the lives of those sailing on it in jeopardy of being drowned. In Jesus' Name, the storms of life will not be able to drown you, your family and your business. While literal storms are natural...More
