The message of the cross

The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. We preach Christ crucified the power of God and the wisdom of God.
1 Corinthians 1:18.23.24

The message of the cross
The message of the cross is always contrary to human wisdom. In the death of Jesus on the cross God makes Himself known, revealing Himself in a way no-one expects or can imagine. People expect Him to be severe towards the wicked, but Christ came to die between two crucified malefactors.

God is outside of our standards. He is infinite; His thoughts transcend ours. In Jesus Christ, His Son, He came among us, suffered and died to save us by taking upon Himself the condemnation that we deserved. That shows the depth of His love for you and me.

The death of Jesus reveals the wickedness of the men who condemned the righteous One and refused Him whom God sent. But the cross reveals, above all, God's incomprehensible love.. He laid our sins on His Son, the just One, so that He could bear the judgment of them.

For us believers the message of the cross is the power of God - power that frees one from the strongest fetters like drugs, alcohol, debauchery and others that are less visible, yet just as formidable: bitterness, hatred, lying, falsehood. It is the power of reconciliation that achieves what no philosopher could bring about. It is the power of love revealing God's forgiveness and grace in all their extent.

If I refuse this message of the cross, I remain in darkness. If I hear it, believe it and allow it to penetrate my innermost thoughts, it is light, life and joy.

Today's reading: Deuteronomy ch. 6, vv. 3 - 25

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
