Fatal unbelief

Jesus delivers us from the wrath to come.Jesus said, You are not willing to come to me that you may have life.I believe; help my unbelief!
1 Thessalonians 1:10; John 5:40; Mark 9:24

Fatal unbelief
During the reign of Joram (9th century B.C.) the powerful Syrian army besieged Samaria, the capital of the northern part of the kingdom of Israel. Famine reached indescribable proportions (2 Kings 7). God suddenly sent a message of hope through the prophet Elisha. It said briefly: Tomorrow there will be an abundance of food.

An officer of the army, the king of Israel's aide-de-camp, who had experienced the famine close at hand, heard the prophet's word. Instead of simply believing it, he ridiculed it, saying, "If the LORD would make windows in heaven, could this thing be?" He thought that such quick deliverance for Samaria was impossible.

However, as always, God's word was fulfilled. God made the besiegers hear the noise of chariots and horses. They imagined that an army had arrived and fled for their lives, abandoning their camp with its horses and provisions. The next day the people rushed to plunder the deserted camp. The scoffing soldier was stoned at the city gate and died. Although a witness of the deliverance, he was deprived of the blessing that God had sent to His people.

Today God has His message of salvation preached to the whole human race: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31). Do we believe it, or do we doubt, like the king's officer? Have we accepted the gospel, or will we be witnesses of the salvation others have experienced and be lost ourselves?

Today's reading: Exodus 24:1-18 · Luke 9:28-36

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
