Past, present and future

Having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we also have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 5:1

Past, present and future
This verse describes in very few words how, thanks to His work on the cross, Jesus Christ has taken charge of a believer's past, present and future.

Our past. Christ bore the punishment that our sins merited. Whoever trusts in such love and the value of His sacrifice is forgiven. God pronounces him just. Consequently he is at peace with God. There is no further obstacle between him and our holy God, for He is fully satisfied with the work of Christ.

Our present. God considers such justified persons, who have the life of Christ in them, to be His children: He has adopted them, they enjoy His favour, and He loves them. His eyes rest on each one benevolently. And God is pleased when His children behave like Christ. To this end He watches over each one. He speaks to us through His Word. He listens to our prayers and answers them. He takes care of us day by day. Our life is thus a life of fellowship with God the Father and with His Son.

Our future. Our future is secure. When our earthly existence ends, this life of communion with God will reach its culmination. In a moment we shall be introduced into the glory of God by the Lord Jesus. This glorious hope is not mere supposition: it is based on Christ's perfect work and on God's promises in His Word, which is the truth.

Today's reading: Exodus 28:31-43 · Luke 11:43-54

Two discouraged disciples were reasoning among themselves...

Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, He interpreted them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE I

When we are told to put on the whole armour of God, one thing becomes clear instantly. This is the fact that there is a God. We cannot be talking of the armour of God if there is no God. Anyone who thinks that there is no God is a fool (Psalm 14:1). You have to pray that God would reveal Himself to you. The...More
