Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (131)

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:1.2

Thoughts on the Epistle to the Romans (131)
The "wretched man" of Romans 7 had finally turned his eyes towards Christ and experienced liberation. Nevertheless, the two natures are still present in the believer (cf. ch.7:25). The old nature, the flesh, will continue to trouble him. But God no longer sees believers in their former state in Adam, but "in Christ Jesus". And if we are united with Christ, who enjoys God's full approval, how could condemnation apply to us? What security this gives us!

From this statement that is valid for all believers Paul again changes to the first person form for personal experiences. "The law of sin and death" had made the Christian, who sees himself subject to the law of God, sense his powerlessness. But now the latter form of law triumphs over "the law of sin".

Take this example: iron particles remain on the ground through the law of gravity. If, however, a powerful electromagnet is switched on above them another, greater force becomes effective, attracting the iron upwards. A Christian has died with Christ and now lives through Him. Whoever has grasped this truth by faith experiences the power of resurrection life and the working of the Holy Spirit for victorious Christian living.

The Holy Spirit gives us the strength for a joyful life of faith that honours God and frees us from the power of sin and death that formerly controlled us.

(to be continued next Sunday)

Today's reading: Exodus 32:25-35 · Luke 14:1-11
