In this parable the Lord Jesus Christ compared Himself with...

The ones (i.e. seeds) that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.
Luke 8:15

In this parable the Lord Jesus Christ compared Himself with a sower scattering seed in a field. It did not all fall on good ground; some fell by the wayside, or on stony ground or among thorns. The seed stands for the Word of God, the varied forms of the ground show how differently people react to the message of the Bible.

In today's verse the Lord explains the attitude of people whose hearts resemble good ground. Whereas the Word heard by others leaves only a temporary impression, these retain it permanently and produce "fruit".

It strikes us that Jesus here emphasises the sincerity of the heart. It can easily happen that someone says, "I can't believe the Bible." The question then arises as to whether the heart is sincere. Is it prepared to receive God's Word, or does it hide behind bogus arguments that sound logical?

There is indeed much in the Bible that cannot be explained by human intelligence. Believers well know that. But they have learnt to trust almighty God and His Word. They know that "with the heart one believes unto righteousness" (Romans 10:10). There we decide what we are prepared to believe.

Our understanding is a gift from God, but it is a tool, not the master craftsman using it. If a sincere heart opens to receive God's Word, the understanding will grow with time. If our understanding fails to comprehend something, we know one thing: the Creator stands over His creation, over nature. His actions are therefore often supernatural and inexplicable.

Today's reading: Exodus 36:14-34 · Luke 17:1-10

Behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their...More

TOTAL COMPLIANCE REQUIRED

When we teach about tithes and first fruits, some people think that it is the pastor's way of making money but they are making a great mistake. When you put God first, He will make sure that your blessings are irreversible. But if you decide to give Him second place in your life, you may not be happy to see what...More
