The illusion of freedom

He (Jesus Christ) died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for him who died for them and rose again. Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us; we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God.
2 Corinthians 5:15.20

The illusion of freedom
Few words stir people as strongly as "freedom". The oppressed and prisoners, or persons addicted to drugs have legitimate aspirations; but the desire for freedom can also be a mere wish for independence to do solely what one wants. Such liberty is nothing but an illusion. In reality it is bondage under evil tendencies within us. We realise it only by turning to God through Jesus Christ. A bird only notices that it is in a cage, when it wants to fly away. A human being naturally feels the need of a reason for living. His physical and emotional needs are not sufficient for his moral guidance: he needs a master over him. Whether he submits to God, or is dominated by his own impetus in claiming to be free, "whoever commits sin is a slave of sin", Jesus said (John 8:34), but He added: "therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed (v. 36).

Believers are free - free to do what is good in God's sight. Once free, care is needed so as not to come under bondage again. Let us all have done with all the years of egotism behind us! Being free, we are able to serve and obey the God of love.

Today's reading: Exodus 39:22-31 · Luke 18:18-30

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

DON'T KILL YOURSELF FOR NOTHING

Do hope you are learning from our meditations through Psalm 73. It pictures to us the reality of everyday living. I do hope you are realizing that after all there is no point envying the prosperous wicked. Do not kill yourself for nothing. You have your life to live. Do not be a puppet dancing the...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
