Jeremiah

Neither he (King Zedekiah) nor his servants nor the people of the land gave heed to the words of the LORD which he spoke by the prophet Jeremiah.
Jeremiah 37:2

Jeremiah
The prophet Jeremiah lived in very difficult times. The people of Israel had got far away from God. So Jeremiah admonished the king and his subjects: they should repent and return to Him. His reproof proved to be in vain. People did not take it to heart: they ignored his words with resistance. They struck him and sought to kill him. But God preserved His servant and gave him further messages for the people.

Because the Israelites hardened their hearts and refused to turn to the LORD, He finally sent the Chaldean army to conquer and destroy the capital Jerusalem. During the siege Jeremiah was imprisoned, yet he continued his prophetic ministry from there. He ordered the inhabitants of Jerusalem to surrender to the Chaldeans, this being the only way for them to remain alive. However, they considered his words treachery. The king handed Jeremiah over to the princes who wished to kill him. They promptly cast him into a miry dungeon.

The lesson we learn from Jeremiah is not to give up our commission to spread the Word of God despite resistance. We can apply what Paul told his fellow worker Timothy to ourselves: "Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist. Fulfil your ministry" (2 Timothy 4:2.5).

Today's reading: Exodus 40:1-16 · Luke 19:1-10

CAN SATAN RIGHTLY ACCUSE YOU?

Besides discouragement, another weapon Satan uses often against believers is their weaknesses. He simply studies an individual for a period of time and not long after, he identifies the fellow's weakness and capitalizes on it. Take for instance Peter. Satan discovered that Peter is a cowardly person-lacking in...More

Hudson Taylor...

John 19:30

The parents of Hudson Taylor (1832-1905), the well-known missionary in China, were believers. From their example, he noticed early in life how helpful prayer and the Bible are.
His parents' exemplary life impressed him, and he endeavoured to be as good a Christian as they were....More
