Our way of thinking

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 2:5

Our way of thinking
Our inner attitude influences our behaviour. For this reason we are encouraged to have the mind of Christ Jesus.

He was "lowly in heart", i.e. humble. He never wanted to make a great public impact. When people wanted to make Him a king, He withdrew from them. He ministered to all, and at the cross He took the lowest place of all. Now He tells us to "Learn from me!" (Matthew 11:29). He is our example of true lowliness of heart, as it can be seen in everyday life. How can we think a lot of ourselves and strive to acquire a reputation, when the Lord was a living example of humility?

Jesus Christ was also sincerely obedient to His God. He would only do what His Father instructed Him. He countered the devil with the words: "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (Matthew 4:4). Is such obedience towards God to be found in our hearts? Are we prepared to do God's will, whatever it may cost? The Bible is the basis for such readiness.

The Lord was meek. How graciously He dealt with His disciples when they were discouraged, or failed to understand Him! And how patiently and silently He bore His enemies' attacks! How do we react when we are insulted? How do we deal with the weaknesses of our fellowmen? We can confront hostile people and bear with the idiosyncrasies of our fellow believers properly only if we do so in meekness.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 6:1-30 · Luke 20:41-47

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
