This verse takes us back almost two thousand years. The stage is set for us to witness a scene in which emotions were running high: a crucifixion. Hatred, contempt, despicable laughter from an agitated crowd: all was cast against a man being crucified between two criminals. The judge had repeatedly stressed that man's innocence, only to stir up the growling crowd all the more. Yielding to their deafening demand: "Crucify him!", he had sentenced the accused to death. Now, condemned, betrayed and denied, He hung on the cross. A brief life came to its end. Was that really so? Thank God, it was not!

Regarding that dreadful scene mankind became a witness of the greatest "peace movement" there has ever been. There Jesus Christ "made peace through the blood of his cross". Scripture makes it clear that "the chastisement for our peace was upon him" (Isaiah 53:5). For that reason the Son of God suffered death.

It was by no means the end of a brief life - quite the opposite, for Jesus Christ rose again. For Him it was not the end, for us it is the beginning: the necessary start for whoever wishes for peace, i.e. peace with God. At this very place, the cross of Jesus Christ, there can be a fresh start for all who confess their sins. Today is a most suitable day for this new start.

"He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted. But he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:4.5).
