Illusions or self-deceit always lead away from the knowledge...

The cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word.
Matthew 13:22

Illusions or self-deceit always lead away from the knowledge of the truth and reality. The consequence is a sobering-up and often also harm that cannot be put right, because one has been too long on a wrong pathway. Nevertheless we often succumb to such illusions and wishes and pretend that the intended objective was within reach.

The deceitfulness of riches that today's verse from the Bible speaks of is one such form of self-deceit. When we are impressed by what we have heard or read in the Word of God, the "deceit of riches" can quickly stifle the effect of the Word on our conscience. The living Word of God admonishes us to self-contemplation and conversion. It shows us how great our guilt and how great the grace of God is. This impression should lead us to grasp salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ and find true joy in Him.

As the very thought mostly displeases people, they put it aside. If someone is wealthy, the danger is even greater. The feeling of security through his possessions can make him more determined to ignore God's warnings. This is what the Lord Jesus means by the expression "the deceitfulness of riches".

Material wealth provides many advantages and comforts, but it cannot provide what is best, like love, faithfulness and a joyful heart. And material wealth has no significance at the gate of eternity. "The rich man's wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his own esteem" (Proverbs 18:11). The wall will, however, collapse, and the imagination be shattered. "But the word of the LORD endures for ever" (1 Peter 1:25).

Today's reading: Jeremiah 23:16-40 · Romans 1:8-17

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
