In the midst of extensive forestland in America lived a hard-working family of smallholders. One evening after the father and the children had gone to bed, the mother was still busy with preparations for the next day.

Until then she had not thought about making preparations for eternity. She knew that she needed Christ as her Saviour, but she had put off making the decision to receive Him into her life.

She fetched some firewood from the barn for the fire in the hearth. When she was passing through the courtyard on her way back to the kitchen she noticed a full-grown jaguar leaping towards her from the forest. She dropped her basket and ran to the front door, which fortunately was still open. She just succeeded in entering and locking the door behind her, when the jaguar crashed heavily against the door and fell unconscious from the impact.

Awakened by the noise, the husband rushed from the bedroom and saw his wife lying on the floor. Through the window he caught sight of the jaguar that was just about to stand up again. He grabbed his rifle quickly and shot the predator.

His wife had meanwhile recovered somewhat from the shock, but she felt by no means at ease. She knew that she was not ready to appear before God's judgment seat. She withdrew to a quiet corner, fell on her knees and confessed her life of sin.

That particular occurrence had led to her "standing still" to hear and obey the word of God.
